Since Joris and Don met in the spring of 1992 (in New York), they have built a long list of concerts, recordings, educational programs and events, and other projects. A definite highlight was playing in London at the Pizza Express with the very fine musicians, Irish drummer Stephen Keogh and Croatian pianist Matyas Gayer.
The club itself has a great vibe and sound, and the wonderful live audience in that space certainly contributed to the relaxed yet energetic jazz journeys. On this recording the feeling among the musicians was creativity, warmth, respect, freedom, challenge and intensity. It seemed that their audience shared those feelings!
They decided to play familiar jazz songs such as “The Chicken”, “Song For My Father”, “Angel Eyes” and “Nardis”, all re-arranged by Joris. They also chose the swinging tune “F.S.R.” (For Sonny Rollins), which is Ray Brown’s melody on the Sonny Rollins classic “Doxy”. Don contributed a refreshed version of his tune “Eddieish”, which he composed in tribute to the great saxophonist Eddie Harris, and a re-harmonized version of Stevie Wonder's “Don't Your Worry 'Bout a Thing”.
